Internet & mobile phone plans in Spain: fiber and SIM cards
How to get connected quickly. A comparison of prepaid SIMs, mobile contracts, and home fiber internet providers (fibra óptica) in Madrid.
Comunidad de Madrid caveats included
The Spanish Telecom landscape
Spain has excellent telecom infrastructure. Home internet is almost entirely fibra óptica (fiber optic), offering speeds from 300Mbps up to 1Gbps.
The market is dominated by the "Big Four" who own the networks: Movistar (Telefónica), Orange, Vodafone, and Yoigo. However, the best deals are usually found with their low-cost sub-brands or independent virtual operators (MVNOs) like O2, Lowi, Simyo, Pepephone, and Digi. These budget providers rent space on the big networks, meaning you get the exact same coverage for half the price.
Prepaid vs. Contract (Contrato)
When you first arrive, you might not have a Spanish bank account or a NIE.
- Prepaid (Prepago): You can buy a prepaid SIM card at the airport, at mobile shops, or in locutorios (internet cafes). You only need your passport. You top it up (recargar) monthly.
- Contract (Contrato): This is a postpaid monthly bill. You need a NIE (often the physical TIE card), a Spanish IBAN (sometimes European IBANs are accepted depending on the provider), and a registered address. Contracts are significantly cheaper per GB of data than prepaid.
Home Fiber (Fibra Óptica)
Setting up home internet takes a few days because a technician must physically visit your apartment to install the router.
Most providers strongly encourage "bundles" (paquetes convergentes), combining fiber internet and 1-2 mobile lines into one monthly bill. This is usually the most cost-effective way to get connected if you are staying long-term.
Step 1: Choose a provider
- Digi: Currently the most popular budget provider in Madrid. Extremely cheap, no-frills, and runs on the Movistar network. They even offer their own ultra-fast network in certain Madrid neighborhoods.
- O2: Movistar’s budget brand. Excellent coverage, great customer service, and no lock-in periods (sin permanencia).
- Pepephone: Known for total transparency, no hidden fees, and excellent customer service.
- Movistar/Orange/Vodafone: Consider the Big Four only if you want premium TV packages (like La Liga football), English-speaking customer service lines, or very specific business services. Otherwise, they are overpriced.
Step 2: The installation process
- Check coverage (cobertura) on the provider's website by entering your address.
- Order online or visit a store. You will need your NIE and Spanish bank account.
- The company will call you to schedule an installation appointment, usually within 2 to 5 days.
- The technician arrives, installs the fiber cable (often routing it from the building's telecommunications room), sets up the router, and verifies the connection. The router is provided for free but must be returned when you cancel.
Red flags
- Hidden permanency clauses (Permanencia): Many contracts come with a 3, 6, or 12-month lock-in period. If you cancel early, you must pay a penalty fee (penalización), which can be over 150€. Always check for "sin permanencia" if you are unsure how long you will stay.
- Aggressive upselling: Store employees will try to sell you expensive alarm systems, tablets, or TV packages you do not need. Stick to basic fiber and mobile.
- European IBAN discrimination: By EU law, providers should accept any SEPA IBAN (like N26 Germany or Revolut Lithuania). In practice, many Spanish telecom companies' online forms only accept "ES" IBANs. You may have to visit a store or call them to force a non-Spanish IBAN through.
3-day connectivity sprint
- Day 1: Arrive in Spain and immediately buy a cheap prepaid SIM card (e.g., Vodafone Prepago or Orange Holidays) using your passport.
- Day 2: Once you have a long-term rental contract, check fiber coverage at your new address and order your internet (bundle it with a mobile line if you have your NIE and bank account ready).
- Day 3: Schedule the technician and cancel your temporary prepaid SIM once the home fiber and new contract SIM are active.
